Authorities report number of victims of hostage-taking in penal colony near Volgograd

Thirteen people were killed as a result of the hostage-taking in a penal colony in the city of Surovikino in Volgograd Region. One of the penal colony employees died in the hospital, and two more victims stay in severe condition, the “Kommersant” reported with reference to the Volgograd Region Committee for Public Health.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on August 23, at the penal colony No. 19 in Surovikino, prisoners took warders hostage. Four penal colony employees were taken to hospitals, including two of them in severe condition. Law enforcers assaulted the penal colony building, and all the hostages were freed. Three penal colony employees were killed on the spot and one more died in the hospital, while the hostages from among the convicted were injured.

In the summer of 2024, hostages were taken by prisoners in two institutions of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) in Southern Russia. The first incident occurred on June 16 at a SIZO (pre-trial prison) in Rostov-on-Don, and the second incident took place on August 23 in penal colony No. 19 in the Volgograd Region. In both cases, the hostage-takers declared themselves supporters of the terrorist organization “Islamic State”*, banned in Russia.

A mother of Temur Khusinov, a possible participant in the hostage-taking at the penal colony, emphasized that her son did not appear in the video footage posted on the Internet. The woman has complained that relatives are not aware of Temur’s whereabouts, as they have lost contact with him, the “RIA Novosti” news agency reported.

Let us remind you that the penal colony employees were taken hostage by four natives of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The attackers declared their connection with the “Islamic State”*, demanded a car and a submachine gun. They also demanded to release their leaders, convicted under terrorist and extremist articles.

*On December 29, 2014, the Supreme Court (SC) of the Russian Federation recognized the organization “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL or IS) as a terrorist international organization and banned its activities in Russia.
