Armed incident in Chechnya becomes first within 11 months

A shootout in the Achkhoi-Martan District, in which law enforcers killed three suspects who exchanged fire with them, was preceded by a similar incident in Gudermes in March 2023.

Unidentified people opened fire on law enforcers in the village of Stary Achkhoi in the Achkhoi-Martan District after the law enforcers had stopped them. As a result, all three suspects were killed.

According to the calculations run by the “Caucasian Knot”, based on its own data and information from open sources, the shootout in the Achkhoi-Martan District has become the first armed incident in Chechnya involving law enforcers since March 29, 2023.

On the above date, sources reported about an attack on a police checkpoint in Gudermes and two suspects killed by law enforcers. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov announced that the law enforcers cordoned off two suspected militants who refused to surrender and were killed.

According to Akhmed Dudaev, Chechen Minister of Press of Chechnya, “two armed terrorists were rendering aggressive resistance.” The minister added that a woman and children also stayed in the house with the suspects and that the civilians were taken out by the law enforcers.

Several people identified the dead as their uncle and nephew, wrote blogger Tumso Abdurakhmanov. The Investigating department for Chechnya of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) announced that the killed suspects were residents of Gudermes born in 1963 and 1989.

Human rights defenders criticized the official version of the events in Gudermes. There is no objective evidence of the guilt of the suspects killed during special operations. Only a court may find a person guilty, but in Chechnya, law enforcers prefer “do justice” against suspects on the spot, believes human rights defender Igor Kalyapin.
