Norwegian Helsinki Committee remembers mass deportation of repressed peoples in USSR

A series of articles reporting about the deportation of peoples during the years of Soviet power has been prepared by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee. The articles contain, in particular, memories of Karachay and Kalmyk people about deportation from their native places and years in exile.

On the 80th anniversary of the deportation of the Karachay people, the mosque in Karachaevsk held religious ceremonies in memory of the people who fell victim to the tragic events of 1943.

The deportation of Karachay people began in the USSR on November 2, 1943. In total, 79,000 Karachay people were deported. Most of those repressed – more than 43,000 people – died on the road and in resettlement places. In modern Karachay-Cherkessia, the day of November 2 is considered the Day of Deportation of the Karachay People,” and May 3 is marked as the Day of Revival of the Karachay People.

Through a series of short articles, the Norwegian Helsinki Committee remembers the suffering of the peoples who were subjected to mass deportation from their homelands in 1943-44.

"Thousands of innocent people perished during transportation and in harsh conditions in Siberia and Central Asia. Many ethnic groups saw their language and culture weakened by the time they could return around 1957. We take the opportunity to speak with a representative of each ethnic group, to hear their reflections on the past, and the present,” the “Caucasian Knot” was reported at NHC.

Let us remind you that in September 2023, activists, scientists, and politicians from the republics of Northern Caucasus criticized a new school textbook on the history of Russia, in which the deportation of the peoples of the Caucasus was explained by their collaboration with the fascists.
