Resident of Dagestan, detained in Ukraine, asks for asylum in Germany

Imangazali Magomedov, a resident of Dagestan, who was detained in Ukraine, has applied to the German Embassy with a request for the status of a political refugee.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in March this year, a Ukrainian court extended the stay of the 43-year-old Magomedov at the deportation centre by six months. On April 1, he asked to be deported to a third country, as he considers it unsafe to return to Russia.

In the summer of 2022, Imangazali Magomedov crossed the border into Ukraine to escape supervision in Russia and was detained by Ukrainian border guards. According to his version, he twice applied for asylum in Ukraine, but the migration service refused to consider his applications. Magomedov explained his decision to leave Russia by the pressure of the law enforcer, who demanded from him to "report about Muslims", threatening otherwise to "imprison" him.

Let us remind you that on June 2, 2014, law enforcers detained Magomedov after searching his and his mother's homes. During the searches, according to investigators, a pistol was found in Magomedov's car. The defendant's advocate stated that her client had been beaten up.

In March 2015, a court sentenced Magomedov to seven years in prison, finding him guilty of aiding militants and illegal possession of drugs and weapons. The convict himself pleaded guilty only to illegal possession of weapons. His defence had appealed against the verdict, but the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan upheld the verdict.

In October 2022, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) recognized that Imangazali Magomedov had suffered from torture by law enforcers and obliged Russia to pay him compensation of 33,800 euros.
