Around 500 journalists and NGO activists sign appeal of "Meduza" in defence of "Dozhd"

The "Caucasian Knot" has joined the statement regarding the revocation of the Latvian license from the "Dozhd" (Rain) TV Channel and expressed its support for the TV Channel. The appeal is widespread due to the fact that the Latvian National Electronic Media Council has annulled the TV Channel's license and banned broadcasting thereof through cable networks.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 28, the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) added Natalia Sindeeva, the Director General of the "Dozhd"* TV Channel, and two journalists thereof to the list of foreign agents. The MoJ justified the action by "realization by the Channel of political activities."

On December 6, Ivars Abolinsh, the head of the Latvian National Council for Electronic Media, announced the decision to cancel the broadcasting license of the "Dozhd"* TV Channel "due to a threat to national security." The reason was the picturing of the Crimea in the map as part of the territory of Russia and "possible support for the Russian Army." Following Latvia, the broadcasting of the "Dozhd" was stopped in Lithuania and Estonia, the "Lenta.ru" has reported.

"We believe that the decision to revoke the license of the "Dozhd" was unfair and disproportionate to the violations cited by the Latvian agency," the "Meduza" outlet has stated, adding that the arguments of Latvian authorities "look unconvincing," since the anti-militarist position of the TV Channel is "obvious."

Besides, the decision of the above Latvia National Council was "a huge gift to Russian authorities," the "Meduza" has pointed out. "By banning the 'Dozhd', Latvian officials are helping the Kremlin to completely destroy independent Russian media. We don't believe that the political situation in Russia can change if its residents are left face to face with propaganda," the journalists have noted.

Let us remind you that the "Dozhd" is actively covering, among other topics, the events in Northern Caucasus. In 2021, the Channel's bosses reported about the threats received for Caucasian stories.
