Discussion format of amendments to Constitution outrages Makhachkala residents

More than a hundred people gathered in Makhachkala after activists and independent media professionals were not allowed to discuss the amendments to the Constitution of Dagestan. Without a public discussion, a draft amendment unacceptable to the society can be adopted, activists have pointed out.

On October 24, activists of public organizations and independent media workers were not allowed to attend hearings on amendments to the Dagestani Constitution, which began in the roundtable format at the Ministry of Nationalities.

On June 30, 2022, the Dagestani Parliament adopted a bill on amendments to the Constitution, including those that remove the obligation to observe the territorial integrity of Dagestan from the head of the republic. Public organizations pointed to the inadmissibility of adopting the bill in this form. On October 22, participants in a discussion held in Makhachkala called on MPs to reject the amendments to the Constitution.

More than 150 people gathered in central Makhachkala, Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" (Draft) outlet, has informed. According to his story, journalists from the "Chernovik" and "Novoye Delo" outlets, in particular, were not allowed to the roundtable.

On October 23, residents of Dagestan and activists held a gathering in Makhachkala, at which they opposed the amendments to the republic's Constitution. The activists stated that they oppose the refusal of the head of Dagestan to defend the territorial integrity of Dagestan and against the tenure of the republic's head for more than two terms.
