Defence challenges verdict to Chechen gays Magamadov and Isaev

Advocates filed a complaint about the verdict to Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev, whom a court in Chechnya found guilty of adding and abetting a militant.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 11, the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya refused to commute the punishment of Salekh Magamadov and his brother Ismail Isaev. On July 21, warders of a penal colony in the Krasnodar Territory placed Ismail Isaev in a punishment cell for 15 days. The defence had not been aware of the Salekh Magamadov’s whereabouts for a month now, an advocate noted on July 20.

On February 22, in Chechnya, a court sentenced Salekh Magamadov to eight years and Ismail Isaev – to six years of imprisonment. According to the investigators’ version, they gave bread, juice, tea, and chocolate to a militant from the Aslan Byutukaev’s grouping. The brothers complained about being tortured after their detentions and said they were forced to sign fabricated confessions.

Advocate Mark Alekseev states that, in his opinion, “absolutely the entire criminal case is one continuous violation.” According to him, the materials about aiding and abetting the militant appeared in the case after the detention of the brothers.
