Azerbaijani activist Aziz Mamiev complains about pressure from law enforcers

Aziz Mamiev, a member of the board of the youth organization of the “Musavat” Party, complained about the use of force during his detention.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on July 20, more than 20 people were detained at a protest action, the participants of which demanded to open land borders. Aziz Mamiev, a member of the board of the youth organization of the “Musavat” Party, who was detained at the protest action on July 20, was sentenced to an administrative arrest for 30 days on the charge of failure to obey the police.

On July 21, activist’s father Iltifat Mamiev could not visit his son at the Binagadi administrative detention facility. “I was denied when I wanted to see my son. I am concerned for his fate. We have information that Aziz was beaten by the police,” Iltifat Mamiev told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

Today, Iltifat Mamiev has come again to the detention facility, but this time together with advocate Osman Kyazimov. The activist’s father has been again denied a meeting, but the advocate has visited Aziz Mamiev.

Aziz Mamiev told the advocate that during his detention and delivery to the police station, the police used force against him.

Osman Kyazimov reports about an intention to file an appeal against the court’s decision to arrest Aziz Mamiev. “I have not yet received the text of the court’s decision and I do not know what is written there. However, it is clear that the accusation of failure to obey the police does not correspond to the reality. Judging by the photo and video footage, Aziz Mamiev was detained in the middle of the street, when he was still on his way to the protest action demanding the opening of land borders. It was the police who unreasonably restricted his freedom of movement,” the advocate said.

According to Osman Kyazimov, the defence will also address the Prosecutor’s Office with a request to investigate the activist’s complaint about physical pressure used by the police.
