“Musavat” Party activist Aziz Mamiev arrested for 30 days

On July 20, Aziz Mamiev, a member of the board of the youth organization of the “Musavat” Party, was detained at a protest action in Baku. The activist has been sentenced to a 30-day administrative arrest on the charge of failure to obey the police.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that participants of the unsanctioned protest action held in Baku on July 20 demanded to open the land borders of Azerbaijan. The police began to detain the activists. In total, according to the “Line of Defence” NGO, 35 people were detained, including protest organizer Tofig Yagublu, a member of the coordinating centre of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) and the “Musavat” Party. All the detainees were released on the same day, human rights defenders reported.

Today, the “Musavat” Party has reported about the administrative arrest of Aziz Mamiev, a member of the board of the party’s youth organization. The activist has been charged under Article 535.1 of the Azerbaijani Code of Administrative Offenses (failure to obey lawful demands of a police officer), the “Musavat” Party reports.

“Aziz was detained when he went to take part in a peaceful rally in Baku on July 20 demanding the opening of land borders. Aziz simply attended the protest action and did not commit any offenses. This can be clearly understood from the words of eyewitnesses and from photographs and video footage from the protest action. Aziz was rudely detained when he was heading to the place of the protest action,” the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent has been told by Faradj Kerimli, the deputy chair of the “Musavat” Party.

According to him, during and after his detention, Aziz Mamiev was subjected to physical pressure, and then he was taken to the Sabail District Court, which sentenced him to 30 days of administrative arrest.
