Head of Armenian Security Council announces deadline for withdrawal of troops from Nagorno-Karabakh

Today, Armen Grigoryan, the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, has announced that the Armenian troops will be withdrawn from Nagorno-Karabakh by September and that the conscription of Karabakh residents to the Defence Army of the unrecognized republic will be continued.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on July 16, at a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Tbilisi, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Djeikhun Bairamov emphasized the need to fulfil all the points of the triliteral declarations signed with the participation of Russia, including the point on the withdrawal of the Armenian troops from Nagorno-Karabakh. On July 15, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev accused the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) of failing to fulfil its promise to ensure the withdrawal of the Armenian troops from Nagorno-Karabakh in accordance with the agreements dated November 10, 2020.

Today, Armen Grigoryan, the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, has announced that the withdrawal of units of the Armenian Armed Forces from Nagorno-Karabakh will be completed by September 2022 and that the security of Nagorno-Karabakh will be ensured by the local Defence Army and Russian peacekeepers.

Armen Grigoryan has explained that the militaries of the Armenian Armed Forces are returning to Armenia. “This process is close to completion and will end in September. (...) Nagorno-Karabakh conscripts will continue to be called up for the military service,” said the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia as quoted in the today’s publication on the “Armenpress” website.
