Russia-West confrontation crosses out former format of Karabakh settlement

Russia is torpedoing the work of the OSCE Minsk Group; as it no longer treats this format as a platform for cooperation with the USA, Tigran Grigoryan and Andrias Gukasyan, political analysts, have stated. Naira Airumyan, a political observer, did not rule out reorganization of the Minsk Group.

Sergey Lavrov, the head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), has claimed that the OSCE Minsk Group on Karabakh settlement had stopped its work at the initiative of the USA and France, but Europeans admit that statements made by leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia may form the basis for the final resolution of all problems.

Mr Grigoryan treats Lavrov's statement as Russia's attempt by to blame the West for the failure of the Minsk format. For the past two years, the format of the Minsk Group has existed formally, he believes. However, he called the likelihood of a new large-scale war in Karabakh to be low.

Andrias Gukasyan believes that Russia's attempt to restore cooperation with the USA and France within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group has failed, which became a pretext for sabotaging the work of the Minsk format. Russia has ruined the Minsk format, because it did not want to send multinational peacemaking forces to Karabakh, Mr Gukasyan believes.
