Georgian Ombudsperson urges to listen to demands of protesting students

Due to financial problems, many students cannot come to Tbilisi, rent an apartment and attend exams; they ask to preserve the distance (remote or online) training due to the difficult socio-economic situation, Nino Lomdjariya, the Georgian Ombudsperson, has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 10, students of the Tbilisi State University (TSU) demanded to preserve the remote training format. They claimed that the cost of renting housing in Tbilisi is too high. Despite the long protests and the promise of the TSU's Academic Council to allow taking exams remotely, the university bosses have announced that the final exams would be held in person.

According to Ms Lomdjariya, there are thousands of students who cannot come to Tbilisi; they are asking for the examination session to be held in the online mode.

The Ombudsperson has also noted that the hostel in Bagebi is being destroyed, and the environment there is dangerous for life.

"The state has disrupted the housing and social support programmes for students; therefore, students often experience hardships in training," Tamta Mikeladze, a TSU teacher, has written on the Facebook*.
