Relatives of convicts call on to expedite investigation into “Terter case”

An investigation into torture in the “Terter case” has been delayed, and their victims remain in prison, protesters in Baku state. They have called on for the release of prisoners and punishment of those responsible.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on November 1, 2021, the Prosecutor’s Office of Azerbaijan acknowledged the torture of the defendants in the “Terter case”, and on December 18, 2021, prosecutors announced the resumption of the investigation into the complaints about torture. Guliev has been the first to be acquitted, which gives hope for the rehabilitation of other convicts, says human rights defender Rasul Djafarov.

“The investigation has been underway for six months already. Why is my son who is not guilty is still in prison?” one of the protesters has said today as quoted by the “Turan” agency.

The protesters also demanded the resignation of the military prosecutor and the holding of “another, unbiased investigation.”

According to the investigators’ version, in May-June 2017, militaries from military units in the Terter, Agdam, and Beylagan Districts interrogated people who were considered suspects in committing crimes and used torture and psychological violence against them. More than 200 militaries fell victim to torture, and 11 of them died.

On December 7, 2021, relatives of the convicts tried to hold a protest action in front of the presidential administration of Azerbaijan with the demand to review the sentences, but the police stopped the protesters.
