Putin signs law on dual citizenship with South Ossetia

The President of Russia has signed a law that will allow holders of South-Ossetian passports to take Russian citizenship without renouncing their current one.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 14, Vladimir Putin submitted a draft federal law to the State Duma on ratifying the agreement on dual citizenship and simplifying the procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship for citizens of South Ossetia. On May 19, the State Duma MPs ratified the agreement with South Ossetia; and on May 25 it was approved by the Federation Council.

The Russian President has signed the Federal Law "On Ratification of the Agreement of Russian Federation with the Republic of South Ossetia on the Settlement of Issues of Dual Citizenship", the "Kremlin.ru" website reported on May 28.

According to the agreement, citizens of one country have the right to acquire the citizenship of the other country without renouncing their available citizenship.

The agreement will enter into force after the parties exchange ratification instruments, and will be valid for five years, and automatically renewed for the same period.
