More Caucasian natives perished in Ukraine than in NCFD armed conflict in eight years

In Ukraine, at least 224 natives of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) have perished since the start of the special operation, while over the past eight years of armed conflict in Northern Caucasus, a total of 143 law enforcers have perished, the "Caucasian Knot" has calculated.

On May 18, the counter-terrorist operation (CTO) regime was introduced in the Leninsky District of Makhachkala. The Russian National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) announced that a terror act at some energy facility was prevented. The Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) has explained that at some electrical substation, two armed men opened fire on law enforcers and were shot dead by response fire.

Prior to this, within five months of 2022, neither victims of the conflict nor armed incidents were recorded in Northern Caucasus. There has never been such a long lull in the entire history of the North-Caucasian conflict. Since 2014, a total of 143 law enforcers perished in the conflict, while at least 224 natives of Northern Caucasus have perished in the special operation in Ukraine from February 24 to May 20, 2022, according to the available official data.

According to the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot", in 2021, overall 32 victims of the armed conflict were recorded in Northern Caucasus. This is by 45.8% less than in 2020 (59 victims). Most of them were recorded in Chechnya (12 victims). The second place among the regions of Northern Caucasus belongs to Karachay-Cherkessia (6 victims), Dagestan and Kabardino-Balkaria share the third place (5 victims in each).

In 2021, according to the NAC, in Northern Caucasus, there were four CTOs: two in Dagestan and two in Karachay-Cherkessia. This is 2.5 times less than in 2020, and by 40% less than in 2019.
