Refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh demand to return them to their homeland

Refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh have declared an indefinite sit-in protest action in front of the UN Office in Yerevan. The protestors claim that the authorities of Armenia and Karabakh are not making enough efforts to resolve the Karabakh problem and also call for the creation of conditions for the Karabakh refugees to live in Armenia.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that refugees from Karabakh repeatedly came to protest actions with the demand to determine their status. On March 16, forced migrants from Karabakh gathered in front of the Armenian government building and demanded to resume negotiations with Azerbaijan.

About 3000 forced migrants from Karabakh signed a demand to take effective steps to return refugees to their homes, said Levon Airiyan, a resident of Gadrut, the head of the organization “In the Name of Gadrut”. However, he notes that the return process may take years due to objective reasons.

Levon Airiyan emphasizes the importance of obtaining refugee status from a political point of view.

“Since Armenia does not condemn the actions of Azerbaijan, we want to show the world with our refugee status that we were forcibly expelled from our homes,” Levon Airiyan explained.

The participants of the protest action stated that they sent many letters to various public institutions, appealed to the Embassies of Russia, France, and the United States, the UN Office, but no one offered a solution to the problems.

Arthur Stepanyan, a resident of Gadrut, notes that Armenia itself does not take responsibility for the fate of residents of Karabakh.
