ECtHR obliges Russia to pay compensation for torture

Russian authorities must pay 52,000 euros to Inal Berov, a resident of Nalchik, who received traumas due to torture at the police, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ruled.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 24, 2016, a complaint was sent to the ECtHR about the torture of Inal Berov, a resident of Nalchik, during his detention by law enforcers in March 2012.

Inal Berov was tortured to force him to confess to the robbery, but he refused to sign the protocol and was released. Inal had a fracture of two vertebrae and a traumatic brain injury, his father Muradin Berov had stated.

The ECtHR's decision is very important not because of the compensation, but because "at least some justice has triumphed," said Muradin Berov. The events of 10 years ago affected Inal's physical and mental health and greatly changed his life, the father has explained.

Some of the law enforcers, whom Inal had identified during the investigation, are still working in law enforcement bodies, "and some have even received promotions," Muradin Berov has added.

Rustam Matsev, a lawyer, has noted that during three years of investigation, the Investigating Committee failed to identify those involved in the kidnapping and torture of Inal Berov.
