Activists demand from UN to ensure preservation of Armenian cultural monuments

At their action in Yerevan, protesters have demanded from the UN to stop the destruction of the Armenian cultural heritage located in the territories of Nagorno-Karabakh that came under Azerbaijan's control, and urgently send UNESCO officials there.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that after the end of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, the parties to the conflict began accusing each other of attempts to destroy each other's cultural heritage.

On February 16, public activists, including those from Nagorno-Karabakh, held a protest action in front of the UN office in Yerevan demanding from Azerbaijan to stop actions against the Armenian cultural heritage sites located in the territories that came under Azerbaijan's after the 2020 war.

The organizers of the action claim that after the autumn 2020 war in Karabakh, "Azerbaijan continues the policy of liquidating everything Armenian in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), (...) erasing every Armenian trace from religious, cultural and historical monuments, thereby falsifying their historical Armenian affiliation."

The activists sent a letter to the UN office, in which they demand to urgently send a monitoring group of the UNESCO and fact-finders to the territories of Nagorno-Karabakh that have come under Azerbaijan's control in order "to prevent the destruction of the Armenian cultural heritage."
