Eldar Gasanov, the former Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Serbia, has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment on the charge of committing economic crimes, and the court has also ruled to confiscate the defendant’s property. Eldar Gasanov pleads not guilty.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that the defence requested the court to release Eldar Gasanov because of deterioration of his health state, but the prosecutor’s office stated that the defendant had not been diagnosed with any diseases incompatible with arrest.

In 2001-2013, Gasanov was the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Romania and, in 2013-2020 – to Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Gasanov declared his innocence; and human rights defenders linked the persecution of the former ambassador to his political ambitions.
