Polad Aslanov refuses to end his hunger strike until court decision

Journalist Polad Aslanov continued his hunger strike, despite the assurances of the General Prosecutor of Azerbaijan about the unbiased and fair consideration of the journalist’s complaint in the Supreme Court (SC).

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 17, Gyulmira Aslanova, a spouse of Polad Aslanov, went to a picket in front of the building of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Azerbaijan. The picketer demanded a meeting with the General Prosecutor, but the police pushed her away from the entrance to the building and later detained her. However, an hour later, Gyulmira Aslanova was released. On January 18, the spouse of Polad Aslanov was invited to the General Prosecutor’s Office, where she was received personally by General Prosecutor Kyamran Aliev, who took the case under his personal control.

On January 6, Polad Aslanov, the editor-in-chief of the Azerbaijani Internet outlets Xeberman.com and Press-az.com, went on a hunger strike demanding a review of his case.

In the afternoon on January 18, Gyulmira Aslanova visited the penal colony with a request to give her the opportunity to make an extraordinary call to her husband to tell him about the results of her meeting with the General Prosecutor.

“I said that his hunger strike partially achieved its goal: the date for the consideration of the case in the Supreme Court was appointed, and I was received by the General Prosecutor and assured that the trial would be fair and unbiased and that there was no further reason to put the state of health at risk. But during the stay in prison, the Polad’s nervous system underwent severe damage. He reacted angrily to my words and said that he would continue his protest action until a decision was made to stop his criminal prosecution,” Gyulmira Aslanova said.

According to her, Polad Aslanov also refused medical support.
