Forced migrants receive housing in Nagorno-Karabakh

A total of 111 families of forced migrants from Gadrut and Shushi have received apartments in newly built houses in Stepanakert; overall, authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh are planning to build 6500 apartments and individual houses for the families of forced migrants. In December, apartments were granted to the families who lost their members at war or occurred in a difficult social situation.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the residents of Gadrut, who moved to Stepanakert after Gadrut came under Azerbaijan's control, complained about problems with employment and high prices for rented housing. During the war, former residents of the Gadrut District lost all their property and belongings.

According to the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh, up to 40,000 people became forced migrants. After the war, some of them returned to Nagorno-Karabakh.

First of all, new apartments in Stepanakert are granted to families of perished servicemen and large families, Artak Beglaryan, the State Minister of Nagorno-Karabakh, has informed.

Anait Abramyan from Shushi, a mother of four children, is pregnant with her fifth child. She said that authorities decided to buy an individual house for them. According to her story, they were forced to leave a large household and a house in Shushi.

After the war, the family of Argine Tonoyan from Gadrut lived in a rented apartment. Argine's husband perished during the 44-day war. The family was provided with housing in a new district in Stepanakert. "Maybe after we got a place to live in, our life will get better," she said with a hope.

"We are not especially happy with the new housing, because my son and husband perished. We left our home ... Of course, the apartment is spacious, but my heart is heavy," said Alina Vardanyan from the village of Djrakus of the Gadrut District of Nagorno-Karabakh.
