In Baku, police stops protest action of relatives of people convicted in “Terter case”

Today, relatives of the people convicted in the “Terter case” have tried to hold a protest action in front of the administration of the President of Azerbaijan. They demanded to review the charges against the convicts. However, the police stopped the protest action.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in the spring of 2017, a group of militaries and civilians was arrested in Baku on the charges of cooperation with the Armenian special services and of plotting acts of sabotage against units of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of Azerbaijan. The investigation and trials in the case were held behind closed doors. During the investigative actions, eight persons were tortured to death, and four of them were later rehabilitated posthumously. The Union “For Freedom of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan” (UFFPPA) recognized 25 persons convicted in the “Terter case” as victims of persecution for political reasons.

The protest action of the relatives of the people convicted in the “Terter case” was scheduled for 11:00 a.m. The protestors intended to gather near the “Icheri Shekher” metro station and go from there to the presidential administration building. However, reinforced police squads and a rapid reaction regiment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) stood in the protesters’ way.

After 15 minutes, the police began to prevent the protestors from communicating with journalists and pushed them inside the “Icheri Shekher” metro station. No protestors were detained.
