Ingush and Chechen officials confirm Fortanga River is back in bed

The earthworks on the Fortanga River, which sparked dispute over the Chechen-Ingush border, are over. The river has been returned to its original bed, the administrations of the border Sernovodsky and Sunzha Districts have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 11, Chechnya launched earthworks on its bank of the Fortanga River, along which the border with Ingushetia passes, which provoked indignation among local Ingush residents. Ramzan Kadyrov conducted unprecedented exercises for Russia: all the Chechen power units moved to the republic's borders for three days. He also warned the Ingush party that if the dissatisfaction with the borders did not stop, they would be revised again in favour of Chechnya.

Officials of the Sernovodsky District explained that the river has been diverted temporarily for the sake of the bank protection works. Magomed Daudov, the Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, also stressed that the works could not affect the border line with Ingushetia.

Osman Evloev, the first deputy head of the administration of the Sunzha District of Ingushetia, has confirmed the completion of the works and the return of the Fortanga River into its former bed.
