Saakashvili's mother reports deterioration of his health

Mikheil (Mikhail) Saakashvili, a former Georgian President, who has gone on a hunger strike to protest against his arrest, is trying to look healthy and cheerful, but looks worse than usual, his mother, Giuli Alasaniya, said after visiting her son in jail.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Mikheil (Mikhail) Saakashvili, a former president of Georgia, was detained on October 1 after he returned to Georgia and was placed into the Rustavi Prison, where he went on a hunger strike and promised to hold it until his release. On October 10, Nikoloz Kipshidze, his personal doctor, said that Saakashvili's health condition had seriously deteriorated in recent days.

In Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili was sentenced in absentia to three years of imprisonment in a case on abuse of power when pardoning those convicted for the murder of businessman Sandro Girgvliani and to six years of imprisonment in a case on the 2005 beating of MP Valery Gelashvili. The former president of Georgia also faces other charges.

On October 11 Saakashvili was visited by his mother and his sons – Eduard, 26, and his brother. According to the mother, she urged Mikhail to stop his hunger strike, but he would not talk to her on this topic.

"He has been on hunger strike for 15 days. It turns out that before he got into the cell, he didn't eat anything [for several days]. [...] He looks not like before now. I was there with my sons. He tried to look cheerful and merry, but this is far from being the case. I urged him to stop his hunger strike, but he wouldn't really listen to me," the "Georgia-Online" quotes Ms Alasaniya as saying.

Eduard Saakashvili said that the family managed to receive a permit to visit Mikhail Saakashvili only on the tenth day of his custody. "We talked to my father ... It is very important that we had such a chance on the tenth day [of his imprisonment]. We've been waiting for this for a long time," said Mikhail's son as quoted by the "News-Georgia".

Nikoloz Kipshidze, Mikhail Saakashvili's personal physician, said that the results of blood tests taken from him are "not encouraging," and in a few days there may be some danger caused by the hunger strike, and he will need medical treatment.
