Armenia: two activists detained at celebrations of Independence Day

In Yerevan, law enforcers have detained two activists who opposed the visit of the Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, to the Erablur Military Pantheon on the Armenia's Independence Day. Authorities did not allow journalists to attend the ceremony in fear of provocations.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Armenian authorities decided to hold large-scale celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the country's independence. Residents of the country have criticized these plans; and relatives of the perished militaries demanded to cancel the holiday.

On September 21, events dedicated to the Independence Day began in Armenia. Police forces were deployed at the venue. High-ranking officials went to the graves of the fallen warriors, but journalists were not allowed to enter the Pantheon.

The restrictions were introduced so that the event would be held without incidents, said Nairi Sargsyan, an assistant to the Prime Minister. According to his story, there are provocateurs among those who introduce themselves as journalists.

Law enforcers took Armen Galstyan, the father of a soldier who died in the autumn war, from the territory of the Pantheon. "The Premier has no moral right to visit the Erablur. This is not a cemetery, but our children's home," Mr Galstyan has stated.

Zarui Postandjyan, the leader of the "Apricot Country" Party, who tried to enter the Pantheon, was also detained.
