Persons sentenced in “Ganja case” appeal against their verdict

Yunis Safarov and nine people, whom Azerbaijani human rights defenders recognized as political prisoners, have filed an appeal against the verdict in a case on the assassination attempt on the Ganja mayor.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on July 3, 2018, an assassination attempt was made against Elmar Veliev, the head of the Ganja administration. After the arrest of suspect Yunis Safarov, a native of Ganja, mass protests took place in the city, and protestors expressed their dissatisfaction with the Elmar Veliev’s activities. The protest action held on July 10, 2018 was attended by about 200 people. The rally was dispersed, and two policemen were killed. About 60 people were sentenced in the riot case.

An appeal has been filed to challenge the verdict against Yunis Safarov and other persons sentenced in the case on the assassination attempt on the head of the Ganja administration, advocate Bakhtiyar Gadjiev reports. According to him, the complaint is expected to be considered in the coming days, the APA reports.

The convicts who filed the appeal were sentenced to 18-20 years of imprisonment. Yunis Safarov was sentenced to life imprisonment.
