Authorities urge Askeran townspeople to help Stepanakert in overcoming water supply crisis

The Mayoralty of Askeran has asked city residents to collect large empty bottles in order to use them for bringing drinking water to the districts of Stepanakert, which have water supply outages.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 7, the Stepanakert Mayoralty announced water supply interruptions in the city. Because of the intense heat, rivers have dried up; and the purification facilities have decreased stock of drinking water, the officials have explained. Townspeople said that they had to buy drinking water in stores or move to relatives. The population of Stepanakert has increased by 20 percent, which led to a shortage of water after one of the rivers had dried up, said Radi Abraamyan, a Deputy Mayor.

According to Aik Shamiryan, Mayor of Askeran, the city has announced the collection of empty bottles for water delivery in Stepanakert. Askeran is 14 kilometres from Stepanakert.

Residents of Vazgen Sargsyan and Azatamartikneri Streets have complained that water carriers deliver water only after a call. Most families collect water from springs or from relatives and friends who have water supply and bring it home themselves. The large Arustamyan family decided to leave the apartment for a while and settle outside the city until the water supply in their district is improved.
