Case of North-Ossetian Tumgoev sent to court

At the court session on the case of Timur Tumgoev, a native of North Ossetia, accused of attacking an employee of a colony in the Saratov Region, prosecution witnesses are testifying.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Timur Tumgoev, a native of Vladikavkaz, took part in a hunger strike held by inmates of the above Saratov colony and cut himself in protest against custody conditions. He is accused of disrupting the work of the correctional institution (colony), his sister and advocate, Sergey Slepukhin, have informed. On June 2, the advocate said that Tumgoev was being provoked because of his faith and wearing a beard. In July, Tumgoev told his sister that they stopped persecuting him because of his refusal to shave off his beard.

Tumgoev was transferred to the SIZO (pre-trial prison), said his sister Marina. "After our last meeting, I've received no new information that he was under pressure," she said.

Let us remind you that on June 26, 2019, the court sentenced Timur Tumgoev to 18 years in a high security colony. According to investigators, in 2014, he left for Georgia, and then moved to Turkey, and from there – to Syria, where he joined militants of the "Jaysh al-Muhajirin wal-Ansar" grouping, which the prosecution treats as a part of the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia. In 2016, Tumgoev was detained in Ukraine; and in 2018, he was extradited to Russia. Tumgoev admitted only the fact of his stay in Turkey. In his last plea, he treated the charges against him as unfair, but expressed his readiness to go to the colony "by the will of Allah."
