Tenants of shelter for homeless in Kutaisi complain about eviction threat

Kutaisi city authorities have reduced the duration of stay in the local shelter built for socially vulnerable residents down to two years. Tenants of the shelter have stated that this period is not enough for them to improve their social status, and complained about the eviction threat.

The Kutaisi Mayoralty has renegotiated a contract with residents of social housing in the city. According to the new conditions, the period of stay therein has been reduced from five years to two; it follows from the message posted on the website of the Kutaisi city administration.

This decision does not mean that people will be evicted haphazardly – social workers will be sent to them to clarify their circumstances. In particular, they will clarify whether the welfare of the tenants of social housing has improved, and whether they can leave it, the message says.

Those who live in the shelter claim that two years is not enough for them to be able to improve their social status. "Where will help come to me from? If I buy something necessary, the number of my points will immediately go up. But this does not mean that I have found a job or that my income has increased. Where should I go?" the edition named "Kutaisi Post" posted on June 24 the comment by the pensioner Gulo Pertaya, whose words were translated by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

A similar opinion was expressed by another pensioner, Daredjan Dvalishvili. "Soon, it will be five years of our living here. Nothing has changed. And now they evict us," the "Kutaisi Post" has quoted Ms Dvalishvili's comment on June 24, as translated by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
