Protesters against Namakhvan HPP block Kutaisi street

Protesters against the construction of the Namakhvan hydroelectric power plant (HPP) on the Rioni River have blocked a street near the "Enka" Company office in Kutaisi and sealed the doors into the building with Scotch tape.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 27, opponents of the construction of the Namakhvan HPP stopped their protests in Tbilisi and resumed their action in the village of Gumati in Western Georgia, where they blocked the office of the "Enka" Company, which is building the HPP.

Protests against the construction of the Namakhvan HPP continue for almost six months. On March 29, the Prime Minister of Georgia announced that the construction of the Namakhvan HPP would be suspended for 9-12 months in order to thoroughly check its impact on the environment. However, on April 4, the preparatory works for the construction of the Namakhvan cascade of hydroelectric power plants were resumed despite Georgian authorities' promises.

On June 7, protesters against the Namakhvan HPP blocked the road near the "Enka" office in Kutaisi and taped up the doors to the office.

Protesters told journalists of the "Formula" TV Channel that special equipment without the "Enka" logos had appeared in the gorge; they believe that the vehicles are carrying materials to the construction site. "Since the company's special equipment cannot enter the gorge, it has been noticed over the past few days that the company is renting other equipment," said Varlam Goletiani, the leader of the protests.

Activists state that their rally is a warning, and they will once again remind the authorities of their main demand, namely, to stop the construction of the Namakhvan HPP. According to their story, a warning action is being held today, and if their demands are ignored, real objects will be picketed off. Due to the rally, the road traffic was blocked.
