Tbilisi City Mayoralty: WW2 veteran’s request to improve his housing conditions cannot be fulfilled

Nikolai Chuyanov, a lonely World War II veteran, did not agree to an offer of the Tbilisi City Mayoralty to move to a nursing home, made after the “Caucasian Knot” had posted a video about the veteran’s complaints about his housing conditions. Officials from the Tbilisi City Mayoralty explain the city budget may not purchase the repairs of private housing.

On May 8, the “Caucasian Knot” posted a video about Nikolai Chuyanov, a veteran of World War II living in Georgia. In late May, the war veteran will celebrate his 99th birthday. Nikolai Chuyanov lives alone in an old house in the centre of Tbilisi. His apartment is not connected to gas supply, and there is no bathroom or WC in the apartment.

Officials from the administration of the Chugureti District of Tbilisi told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent that the legislation prohibits making repairs and improving conditions in private housing, including as an exception.

After the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent applied to the Chugureti District administration, its employees examined the veteran’s apartment. “We offered maximum assistance for Nikolai Chuyanov, including the purchase of all the necessary medicines for him. We also offered to move him to a nursing home for a permanent residence. He thanked us, but refused to move to the nursing home and explained that he wants to live within his native walls,” said a press officer of the administration of the Chugureti District of Tbilisi.
