In Dagestan, schoolteachers go on strike

In the village of Gutatli in the Tsuntinsky District of Dagestan, teachers of a secondary school are continuing a protest rally with the demand to dismiss the principal, who has recently been reinstated at job through the court.

The teachers note this is their fifth strike. They accuse the principal of cutting their salaries and extorting money. The teachers on protest also refer to the act of checking the targeted and effective use of the school’s budgetary funds dated March 29 with registered violations, the weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft) reports.

The participants of the strike claim that parents of schoolchildren also stand against the return of the principal and have transferred their children to a neighbouring school. An appeal on behalf of the parents and teachers of the village school was sent to the Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Education of Dagestan, and Sergey Melikov, the acting leader of Dagestan. In their appeal, the protestors requested to draw attention to the current situation in the village school.

According to schoolteacher Magomed Tinagadjiev, a participant of the strike, “the whole village” stands against the principal. “We appealed to the leader of the republic and the Prosecutor’s Office. If they don’t take action in the near future, we will address further instances,” the schoolteacher said.

He notes that the principal, against whom the protesters stand, has already been dismissed several times, but each time she was reinstated at job. The principal was last dismissed in 2019, but this year she was reinstated at job through the court again.
