Latvia’s parliament recognizes Armenian Genocide

Members of the Latvia’s Saeima (parliament) passed a declaration on the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. The document resulted from a discussion between historians, the press service for the Latvia’s Saeima notes.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on April 24, US President Joe Biden recognized the Armenian Genocide. The US President’s declaration caused an international outcry, although the House of Representatives of the US Congress did the same in 2019. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan considered the Joe Biden’s declaration to be the restoration of historical justice. The US President’s declaration may be explained by the desire of the United States to strengthen the country’s positions in Southern Caucasus, but it will hardly affect the relations between the US and Azerbaijan, Baku analysts predict.

According to the press service for the Latvian parliament, the country condemns all crimes against humanity and considers itself obliged to recognize such crimes in order to prevent their recurrence.

The recognition of the Armenian Genocide cannot have any legal consequences, the Latvia’s Saeima points out. However, the declaration of the Latvia’s Saeima “is of great importance for the Armenian people,” Tigran Mkrtchyan, Armenian Ambassador to Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, emphasizes on Facebook.
