Amnesty International calls Russia to stop tortures in Chechnya

The "Caucasian Knot" has already informed that the world's largest human rights organization Amnesty International (AI) made a statement accusing Russian authorities of using tortures in Chechnya. Earlier, Ms. Victoria Webb, a leading researcher of Russia in this organization, has retold the contents of the document by phone from the MI's headquarters in London to the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot."

The Amnesty International calls the Russian Federation to immediately undertake clear steps to eradicate tortures, inhuman treatment, voluntary detainments and "disappearances" in Chechnya, and to stop impunity for this sort of crimes. The statement of the Amnesty International was connected with the publication on March 13 of an unprecedented, third in the row, statement of the European Committee for Prevention of Tortures and Other Forms of Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishments (ECPT) about inhuman treatment and tortures in Chechnya, added with quotations from the report on the results of the visits to the region in 2006.

"According to the norms of international law and legislation of the country, Russia is obliged to protect the arrested persons in Chechnya against tortures and other forms of inhuman treatment," the document runs.
