Activists urge USA not to admit amnesty for Georgian law enforcers

The United States should influence the Georgian authorities to prevent pardoning, along with political prisoners, of the law enforcers, who had taken part in the harsh dispersal of the rally, protesters in Tbilisi stated on April 26.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 19, members of some Georgian oppositional parties and the ruling "Georgian Dream" Party came to an agreement to resolve the political crisis in the country, which includes, among other things, an amnesty for political prisoners and the holding of parliamentary elections. On April 24, about a dozen activists protested in front of the Georgian Parliament, demanding from the authorities not to pardon the law enforcers, who had taken part in the violent dispersal of the rally against the visit of Sergey Gavrilov, a Russian State Duma MP, in June 2019.

On April 26, a group of activists of Georgian NGOs went out to a protest rally in front of the US Embassy in Tbilisi, demanding not to allow pardoning of the above law enforcers, involved in the harsh dispersal of the rally at night on June 20, 2019.

The activists explained their action at the US Embassy by the fact that this country has a high prestige before the world community and pays special attention to human rights in the world. "The USA is one of the leading states; it has a high authority in the field of human rights protection. The annual report of the US Department of State on human rights is same important as the reports drafted by human rights organizations. Therefore, we expect that the authority of this country will be enough to prevent the amnesty of the policemen, who had committed crimes against human rights by dispersing the rally by illegal means," Irakli Kikiani, the head of the NGO "Third Sector", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
