Armenian President calls on UN Secretary-General to assist in return of POWs

Today, in his letter to the UN Secretary-General, the President of Armenia has declared that the country expects the support of the international community to resolve the problem with the return of prisoners of war (POWs) and civilians from Azerbaijan.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in the period from April 8 to 15, mass protests were held in Yerevan and the Shirak Region with the demand for the return of Armenian prisoners of war.

In the letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Armenian President Armen Sarkisyan has called on the UN to take all necessary measures for the immediate release and return to the homeland of all Armenian prisoners of war held in Azerbaijan. “During and after the war, Armenian military personnel and civilians were captured. They are being subjected to torture and inhuman treatment,” the “Sputnik Armenia” quotes today a fragment of the Armenian President’s letter.

“At present, Azerbaijan grossly violates human rights and international humanitarian law and continues to deny and prevent the return of civilians and prisoners of war taken hostage,” the international information agency “News Armenia” quotes the Armenian President as declaring in his letter.

Armenia expects support from international partners to resolve the problem with the immediate return of all POWs, Armen Sarkisyan emphasizes in his letter to the UN Secretary-General.
