Relatives report kidnapping of native of Chechnya after deportation from Germany

People in civilian clothes took away Nurmagomed Mamuev, a native of the Urus-Martan District, who had been deported from Berlin, to some unknown place, his wife said. She turned to human rights defenders asking to help in finding him, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial"* has reported.

According to Mata, Nurmagomed's wife, on March 24, at 1:35 a.m. local time, law enforcers broke into their apartment in Berlin, breaking down the door, and took her husband, aged 32, away.

When next morning, Mata went to the police station in Berlin, they didn't tell her where her husband was and why he had been detained. Later, law enforcers told her that Mamuev was already in Russia, says the HRC's press release.

According to Mata, she learned that in Moscow Mamuev was handed over to Chechen authorities, and in the evening on March 25, employees of the Urus-Martan ROVD (District Interior Division) brought him to his mother's house in Shalazhi. "In the morning on March 26, people in civilian clothes came for him. They did not introduce themselves, did not show any documents. Nurmagomed's relative called the Urus-Martan ROVD and informed about the arrival of these people. He was told that they knew nothing, that the men were some power agents, and Mamuev should go with them to a conversation," rights defenders have stated.

Relatives were not told where Mamuev was taken; he was not at the ROVD, the HRC's press release says.
