Advocates assess prospects of prosecution in Pogorov's case

The detention of Akhmed Pogorov is unlikely to change the accusations against the other defendants in the "Ingush case". This opinion was voiced by the advocates interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot". The defenders also ruled out the merger of the Akhmed Pogorov's case with the cases of other defendants, since there would be a need to start the entire investigation from the beginning.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 26, the advocate reported about the detention of Akhmed Pogorov, a co-chairman of the World Congress of Ingush People. The Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) announced that Akhmed Pogorov was charged with organizing violence against law enforcers at a rally in Magas in 2019.

On March 26, 2019, residents of Ingushetia continued their protest rally in Magas without a sanction from the authorities. In the morning on March 27, protesters clashed with the police. Starting since the early April of 2019, mass arrests of oppositionists took place in Ingushetia. The case of seven Ingush protest leaders, accused of creating an extremist community in connection with the rally in Magas, is being considered since November 24, 2020, by the Essentuki City Court.

Advocate Magomed Gagiev, who spoke in defence of Akhmed Pogorov on March 1, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the case against Akhmed Pogorov is identical to the charges against the other defendants, with the only difference that it was separated into an individual proceeding in connection with his search.

Advocate Ramzan Uzuev, who defends several defendants in the "Ingush case", has told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the Akhmed Pogorov's case will not be combined with the case against the seven protest leaders.

"I don't think they will combine his case with anyone else's case. Otherwise, they will have to start the investigation anew, and they will not agree to that," the advocate said.

The defender has also noted that in connection with the detention of Akhmed Pogorov, the investigators will unlikely add any points of accusation to other defendants.
