"Akhmat is Power" Arch elevates personality cult of Akhmat Kadyrov

At the entrance to Grozny, the slogan "Akhmat is Power" on a new arch replaces the Muslim phrase "Allahu Akbar", social networks users note. In Chechnya, so many facilities are named after the Ramzan Kadyrov's father that it is time to rename the republic to Akhmatia, users write in their ironic comments.

The personality cult of Akhmat Kadyrov began to form in Chechnya after his death in 2004, although the cult of personality is historically not typical for the Chechen mentality, says Akhmed Gisaev, the director of the Human Rights Analysis Centre.

"Why 'Akhmad is power'? Why not 'Allah is power' or Ayahs (verses) from the Koran?" Instagram user _ukrainochka_161 expresses her surprise.

Grozny resident Suleiman finds the inscription on the arch inappropriate. "They could have written 'Welcome'. And the inscription 'Akhmat is Power' is more suitable at an entrance to a gym," he said.

The personality cult of Akhmat Kadyrov as a whole and its individual elements are criticized in the republic. So, after officials had taken part in a ceremony to lay flowers at the Kadyrov obelisk on August 23, residents of the republic said that the officials violated the Islam ban on erecting monuments.

Chechnya regularly opens new facilities dedicated to Akhmat Kadyrov. So, on October 5, a museum named after Akhmat Kadyrov was solemnly opened at the Akhmat-Khadji Kadyrov Education Centre.
