Commission finds no life threat in Yagublu's condition

The health condition of the opposition politician, Tofig Yagublu, is grave but stable; there is no threat to his life, the state commission has concluded. However, Tofig's daughter fears that he will not live to see the trial.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 2, oppositionist Tofig Yagublu declared a hunger strike. On the other day, the court sentenced him to four years and three months of imprisonment. On September 12, Tofig Yagublu was transferred to a private clinic amid the threat of a coma. On September 16, his doctor, Professor Adil Geibulla, stated that Tofig's health had reached a critical state on the 15th day of his hunger strike, and it had been decided to make his blood transfusion.

Tofig Yagublu is on the 17th day of his hunger strike, his daughter Nigyar Khazi has reported today.

"In the evening yesterday (on September 17), he was examined by a special commission of the Joint Administration of Territorial Medical Units, which found his condition to be grave. Now, they've realized themselves that my father's condition is critical; and he simply will not survive till the appeal trial scheduled for September 28. Ilham Aliev's power is responsible for his life," Ms Khazi told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Tofig Yagublu's condition is grave but stable, said Shahriyar Fatullaev, the advisor to the board chairman of the above commission.

"We recommended the patient to stop his hunger strike immediately. Otherwise, if it continues, the metabolic processes underway in his body may accelerate even more. In the current condition, there is no threat to his life. In general, Yagublu's condition is assessed as grave but stable," The "Haqqin.az" quotes Mr Fatullaev as saying.

The International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR) has sent an open letter to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev, expressing its concern over the conviction of oppositional politician, Tofig Yagublu, and called on the Azerbaijani authorities to immediately release him.
