Azerbaijani oppositionist Tofig Yagublu not to stop hunger strike despite health threat

Tofig Yagublu, who is continuing a hunger strike to protest against his conviction, has lost a lot of weight and experiences difficulties with walking, his advocate reports. Relatives of Tofig Yagublu demanded permission to call him every day.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 2, Tofig Yagublu, a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) and the "Musavat" Party, claimed the court's biased attitude in his case on disorderly conduct and went on a hunger strike. On the other day, the court sentenced him to four years and three months of imprisonment.

The police claim that Tofig Yagublu provoked a road traffic accident and attacked a married couple. The politician called himself a victim of provocation. The human rights organizations "Human Rights Watch" (HRW) and "Amnesty International" (AI) condemned the activist's conviction, while the US and EU urged the Azerbaijani authorities to reconsider the Tofig Yagublu's case.

The health state of Tofig Yagublu had worsened greatly, his daughter Nigyar Khazi reported. However, according to her, the politician is not going to stop his hunger strike.

Advocate Agil Laidjev added that Tofig Yagublu went on the hunger strike "because of injustice towards him."
