Emin Sagiev's hunger strike is linked to protest against political persecution

After the judgement of the Azerbaijani Supreme Court (SC), Emin Sagiev, a political prisoner, went on a hunger strike, insisting on his innocence and demanding release, his advocate has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Emin Sagiev (also referred to as Shagiev), a relative of the journalist, Tyurkel Azertyurk, was detained in Azerbaijan on November 17, 2017. In October 2018, he was sentenced by the Baku Grave Crimes Court to seven years in prison for the alleged drug dealing. After the refusal of the Azerbaijani SC to satisfy the cassation appeal against the verdict, on August 18, 2020, Sagiev announced the start of his hunger strike.

Emin Sagiev insists on his innocence and demands release, his advocate, Bakhruz Bairamov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, noting that the consideration at the SC was formal. "At the trial, Emin again said that he was protesting against injustice. He is convinced that he is persecuted for the oppositional journalistic activities of his relative, Tyurkel Azertyurk. There are no reliable proofs of Emin's guilt in the case files. But the SC wouldn't heed our arguments and upheld the verdict," said the advocate.
