Family of murdered KBR resident claims compensation from FSB

The mother and brother of Khusei Makitov, the murdered resident of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), filed a lawsuit demanding compensation for moral harm, estimated by them at 5 million roubles. The family's advocate insists that the FSB should pay the money, not the convicted officer Pavel Sterlyagov.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 19, 2019, a court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Pavel Sterlyagov, a former FSB officer, to nine years in a high security colony, having found him guilty of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm that entailed the death of the victim by negligence. Instagram users found the sentence too lenient given the possibility of a conditional early relief (CER). On December 5, 2019, the Russia's Supreme Court upheld the verdict.

Khusei Makitov was killed on April 6, 2018, in the dwelling settlement of Terskol. The above Pavel Sterlyagov was charged with the murder. Makitov's death triggered local residents' protests; they demanded to punish the guilty person. On June 7, 2019, the jury found Sterlyagov guilty of Makitov's murder, while believing that he had no intent to commit the murder out of hooligan motives.
