"Mediazona" reports on deaths registration problem during pandemic in Northern Caucasus

In the spring of 2020, the mortality in Southern Russia increased, but the official statistics on COVID-19 victims fails to explain this increase. Such statistics for Northern Caucasus during this period shows that some of the deaths were not registered, the "Mediazona" writes.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Dagestan, where by June 30, a total of 374 coronavirus deaths were recorded, is in the lead in the number of pandemic victims among the regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD). The total number of COVID-19 victims in the NCFD has reached 693.

According to the "Mediazona", the mortality in Dagestan, Ingushetia and other regions of Southern Russia has dropped dramatically. According to Alexei Raksha, a demographer, the reason is that many deaths in these regions remain unregistered.

"We know nothing about mortality in the Caucasus ... There are no complete statistics in Dagestan; and it is not available for the Caucasus either; and it's not clear when it will be restored," Mr Raksha has stated.
