Residents of Chechnya upset by ban on marriage because of coronavirus

Adam Ilyasov, Deputy Mufti of Chechnya, has warned that violators of the ban on marriages, introduced because of coronavirus spread will be fined. The local residents interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" are upset by the new ban.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that, due to the threat of coronavirus spread, Chechnya introduced a ban on wedding ceremonies; clergymen are prohibited from registering marriages according to Islamic traditions.

The persons who violate the ban on marriages imposed on April 13 in Chechnya will be fined, Adam Ilyasov, Deputy Mufti of Chechnya, said on April 14.

The residents of Chechnya, interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, expressed their dissatisfaction with the prohibition of marriages, given the approach of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan with its fasting.

"Ramadan begins on April 24. During this month it is not customary to get married. We had planned a wedding for April 19; we gathered all the certificates, prepared everything, and now we have this ban. Really, why couldn't they give people time or warn in advance that weddings may be cancelled, just like tezets (wakes)? No, they've informed at the last moment. Now, it turns out that we'll have the wedding no earlier than end of May; but who knows what can happen during these six weeks," Zara, a local resident, has stated.
