Arrest of Akhmed Barakhoev extended

In the Stavropol Territory, a court pronounced a decision to leave Akhmed Barakhoev, one of the leaders of the Ingush protests, in custody until April 11.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Akhmed Barakhoev has been in custody since April 3, 2019. A case was instituted against him under articles on calls for mass riots and use of violence against a public officer. In January, the activist was also charged with creating an extremist community.

The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" recognized Akhmed Barakhoev and four other leaders of the Ingush protest as political prisoners.

Today, the Yessentuki City Court has pronounced a decision to extend the arrest of Akhmed Barakhoev until April 11, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has been informed by Bashir Tochiev, an advocate of the Ingush activist. "The defence requested the court to release Akhmed Barakhoev under house arrest, because there is no reason to believe that the defendant can hide or put pressure on witnesses," Bashir Tochiev reported.

Relatives of Akhmed Barakhoev did not arrive to Yessentuki to attend the court hearing, since nobody but the participants of the trial was allowed into the courtroom, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Leyla Barakhoeva, a sister of the defendant.
