In Moscow, roundtable participants voice main problems of Caucasian women

According to participants of a roundtable held in Moscow on March 5, women of Northern Caucasus face problems of education, "honour killings," mutilation surgeries (female genital circumcision), and the practice of polygamy.

The purpose of the roundtable "Socio-economic transformation of Russia (1990-2020) and the status of women" is to familiarize film producers with the situation of women in Russia, explains Nadezhda Azhgikhina, the co-chair of the "Female Journalist" International Club.

The situation of women in the Caucasus varies depending on the region and social status, emphasizes Saida Sirazhutdinova, the president of the Centre for Global Studies of Present and Regional Problems "Caucasus. World. Development". "This is happening amid re-Islamization and the growth of traditionalism," Saida Sirazhutdinova notes. Among the new acute problems, she mentioned restrictions on women's education, ban on movement, and polygamy.

Galina Mikhalyova, the head of the female faction of the "Yabloko" Party, emphasized that the situation of women in the Caucasus is noticeably worse than the situation of women in other Russian regions. "Among the problems, these are 'honour killings,' polygamy, coercion to early marriages, and female circumcision in Dagestan," Galina Mikhalyova listed.

In turn, Nadezhda Azhgikhina believes that the situation with the coverage of problems related to the situation of women in the Caucasus has begun to change for the better in recent years.

Unlike central Russia, in Dagestan, the society does not support women who dare to "carry garbage out of a hut," notes journalist Svetlana Anokhina.
