Aslan Bzhaniya's disease exacerbated crisis in Abkhazia

If the hospitalization of Aslan Bzhaniya, a presidential candidate in Abkhazia, prevents him from taking part in the election, this will entail a full-scale political crisis with unpredictable consequences, the Abkhazian journalists interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 3, about 400 people held an action outside the building of the Cabinet of Ministers, demanding resignation of the government and the acting president of Abkhazia. They insisted to postpone the presidential election scheduled for March 22.

The protests began after Aslan Bzhaniya, a presidential candidate, was urgently hospitalized on March 2 in the Krasnodar Territory. The members of the new initiative group believe that he was poisoned. A consulium of Krasnodar doctors has established that his bilateral pneumonia had caused Mr Bzhaniya's hospitalization, Abkhazian journalists have reported.

The Bzhaniya's hospitalization will cause an intensification of the political crisis in Abkhazia, as the opposition has already stated that no election will take place without their candidate, Anton Krivenyuk, a journalist, believes.

"It's absolutely clear that the forces that oppose the opposition will try to use this circumstance to hold the election," Mr Krivenyuk told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. The journalist believes that this will entail a "full-scale, very severe political crisis with unpredictable consequences."
