Ingush activist Akhmed Nalgiev sentenced to 21 months of imprisonment

Today, in the Stavropol Territory, a court has found Ingush activist Akhmed Nalgiev guilty of attacking law enforcers during protests against the border agreement with Chechnya. The defence did not agree with the verdict of guilty.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Akhmed Nalgiev has been in custody since April 23, 2019. In the course of the trial, Akhmed Nalgiev claimed that the criminal prosecution deprived him of his job and damaged his reputation.

According to public prosecutors, in the morning on March 27, 2019, Akhmed Nalgiev took an active part in clashes between the participants of the unsanctioned rally and fighters of the National Guard of Russia and the OMON (riot police). Investigators claim that Akhmed Nalgiev kicked a shield of a National Guard fighter and then stroke with his fist another law enforcer to his neck.

The Zheleznovodsk court sentenced Akhmed Nalgiev to one year and nine months of imprisonment in a penal settlement-colony. The activist was found guilty of an attack on law enforcers, but the court did not agree with the investigators' version of the political motives for the defendant's attack, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by advocate Mukhtar Mishaev.

"We will challenge the verdict at the Stavropol Territorial Court of Appeal. We are dissatisfied with the verdict, since my client is not guilty. If the verdict does not enter into legal force, then Akhmed Nalgiev will be released on March 6. If it enters into legal force, then my client will be released on March 9," the advocate said. He also explained that under the law, a day at a SIZO (pre-trial prison) was equal to two days at a penal settlement-colony.
