Film about women's lives in Dagestan approved by Moscow audience

The premiere screening of a documentary in memory of Aishat Magomedova was held in Moscow. The film made people think about the hard lives of women living in the mountains of Dagestan, the audience notes.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 27, 2019, the closed screening of the documentary "They also had their own dreams: the stories of Dagestani women" was held in Makhachkala, in anticipation of the award of Dr. Aishat Magomedova, a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The film tells the audience about the difficult life of women living high in the mountains and describes the problems of their lives. The documentary was created with the support of the German Heinrich Belle Foundation. The idea of the film was proposed by director Alexander Fyodorov and producer Elena Srapyan, who spent two months in Dagestan collecting material for the film.

In Moscow, the premiere took place at the Centre for Documentaries on February 5.

After watching the film, people shared their impressions with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. "It's a strong impression that you can't take your eyes off at some points. And they'll be remembered for a long time," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Irina Starodubrovskaya, the head of the Political Economy and Regional Development Scientific Direction at the Economic Policy Institute named after Yegor Gaidar.

Viewer Lera admitted to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that she knew little about Dagestan and the Caucasus in general. "I heard about the hard problems of women in the Caucasus, but I had no idea that these are such conditions in the mountains. In the film, one of the women said that she went four kilometres uphill to bring water home. And water is needed every day. For me this is unthinkable. I wouldn't be able to live like that," Lera noted.
